Itinerary
Kinkaku-ji
30 min
It was built in the 14th century as a shogun's second home. After he died it became a temple. Stand in front of the pond and a second golden building appears in the water. It has three floors, each in a different style, and you cannot go inside.
The gate opens at 9:00 AM exactly. We meet at 8:15 AM so that we are inside in that first hour.
The Kimono Forest
13 min
The Randen tram station at Arashiyama is a sight in itself. About 600 pillars, two metres tall, hold kimono fabric sealed inside acrylic. They stand on the platform and along the track, so you walk through the station as if through a wood. There are 32 patterns.
It was made in 2013 when the station was rebuilt. The fabric comes from a Kyoto dyeing works that has run since the Taisho period.
The bamboo path & Nonomiya
25 min
A path about 400 metres long, with nothing but bamboo on either side. This is not the destination today. We take photographs and walk on through. On the way, Nonomiya Shrine has a torii gate built from logs with the bark still on, the oldest form of gate in Japan.
The shrine appears in The Tale of Genji, written a thousand years ago. Princesses on their way to Ise stayed here to purify themselves.
Okochi Sanso Garden
45 min
Beyond the bamboo lies a garden of about two hectares. A film star of the 1930s made it himself, from the age of 34 until he died, about 30 years. From the tea house at the top you look out over Kyoto. The ticket includes matcha and a dry sweet.
The hill is Mount Ogura, written about in poetry for a thousand years for its autumn colours. He fell for the view and bought the land.
Arashiyama Park & the bridge
25 min
Rather than go back the way we came, we cut through the park and down the hill. From the lookout the Hozu river lies at the bottom of the valley. With luck a boat comes down it, or the sightseeing train passes. At the bottom is Togetsukyo Bridge, 155 metres long.
The hill with the lookout is called Kameyama, turtle hill. The ridge running down from Mount Ogura is said to look like one.

FAQ
Why do we meet at 8:15 AM?
Because Kinkaku-ji opens at 9:00 AM. We work back from that so we are inside in the first hour. Start later and everything shifts, and you reach the bamboo path when it is at its busiest.
Where do we meet and finish?
We meet at 8:15 AM at the Central Gate of Kyoto Station and finish at 12:15 PM at Togetsukyo Bridge. Kyoto Station is about 16 minutes from JR Saga-Arashiyama. Nagatsuji street is full of places to eat, so you can go straight on to lunch.
Are there any hills?
Hardly any. The tour walks about 4 km, with no steep climbs. That said, the garden at Okochi Sanso does rise and fall. It is a gentle climb to the tea house, and the way down takes the route with the better views.
How is this different from the other 4-hour tour?
This one covers the west side of Kyoto, Kinkaku-ji and Arashiyama. There are no hills, and there is time to sit in the garden. The other 4-hour tour covers the east side, Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera and Higashiyama, with stone steps and slopes. Both finish by midday.
What happens if it rains?
Light rain does not change the plan. Please bring an umbrella or a raincoat. Kinkaku-ji is worth seeing in the rain, and at Okochi Sanso you can sit in the tea house. The garden underfoot does get slippery, so please take care. If we cancel for weather or safety, such as a typhoon, you get a full refund or a new date.
How much cash do I need on the day?
Costs on the day come to about¥2,390 per person in total. That is ¥890 for trains and buses, ¥500 for Kinkaku-ji and ¥1,000 for Okochi Sanso. Entrance fees are cash only, so please bring cash. IC travel cards work for the fares.
Can you pick us up at our hotel?
There is no hotel pick-up. Your guide will be waiting at 8:15 AM at the Central Gate of Kyoto Station.
Can we join with children?
Yes. There is no age limit. Babies and children count towards the 7 people. The tour walks about 4 km with no steep climbs, though the garden at Okochi Sanso does rise and fall. Please bring a pushchair or a carrier for small children.
